THE ONE-PAGE CHECKLIST LENS 03 · IS THE PRICE FAIR? ONE COMPANY · SIX LENSES Before You Buy a Stock Read the numbers. Skip the hype.
Why this exists

It's 9:47pm. Someone posts a chart with three rocket emojis. You buy. Six weeks later you sell at a loss.

You're not bad with money. You just never got taught how to read the one document that tells you the truth about a company: its financials. So you did what everyone does — you borrowed conviction from someone else's post.

Here's the turn. You want to be the one who knows, not the one who hopes — to open a company's numbers yourself and form your own opinion before you risk a dollar on someone else's. That's the whole point of this.

The case study · Beyond Meat

The story went one way. The cash went the other.

In 2019 the narrative was irresistible: plant-based meat, a rocketing IPO, celebrity backers. The share price told that story. The cash-flow statement told a quieter one — and the quieter one was right.

2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 Peak ≈ $234 (2019) IPO $25 ≈ $6 Cumulative cash burn, ever deeper → Share price Cumulative cash from operations

Same company, same years, two lines pointing opposite ways. Anyone who read the second line wasn't surprised by the first. That reading is a skill — and it's teachable.

The Six-Lens Read

Six lenses · twenty-four checkpoints

Not six chapters to skim — six questions you run in a fixed order on any stock, each with concrete line items to check. By the end it's one page you can run at 9:47pm before you touch the buy button.

What you get

The guide teaches the why. The One-Page Checklist is what you use.

A ~30-page guide that walks all six lenses on one real company — Beyond Meat, using its actual filings — so you see the method work on a business you can look up yourself.

Then it collapses into the One-Page Checklist: the whole method as a single checklist you run before every buy. The guide explains why each line is there; the checklist is what's open on your screen at 9:47pm.

What comes after the guide

The guide gets you reading. The courses get you deciding.

The guide takes you through the whole method on one company. The courses are where it becomes a skill you own — building the harder tools and practicing until your own read is the one you trust. Both are in preparation now, and the list gets first access when they open.

In preparation · Course one

The Valuation Course

Go past the multiples. Build a discounted-cash-flow model from a blank sheet, understand what every assumption is really doing, and develop judgment for the ambiguous calls — the ones where the "right" number isn't obvious and most people just guess.

build a DCF from scratch assumptions that matter judgment on messy calls
In preparation · Course two

The Practice Program

Run the full method on live companies, one after another, with feedback on your reads. You do the analysis, you make the call, and you find out where your thinking held up and where it slipped — until doing your own homework before a buy is simply how you operate.

Straight talk

This isn't for everyone.

A quick gut-check before you join. The wrong fit wastes your time and mine — so here's who this is and isn't built for.

Give this a miss if…

  • You want tickers to copy and price targets to follow.
  • You trade on charts and momentum, not the business underneath.
  • You're looking to get rich by Friday.
  • You won't actually open a filing and do the reading.

It's built for you if…

  • You buy individual companies and want to understand what you own.
  • You've been burned borrowing someone else's conviction — and you're done with that.
  • You have no finance background, but you're willing to learn the real thing.
  • You'd rather be a little slower and actually right.

Before you ask

Isn't this stuff free online?

The definitions are. What's not free is the order to read them in, which numbers actually matter, and a worked example on a real company that shows the method catching what the hype missed. That's what the guide is.

Do I need a finance background?

No. If you can read a nutrition label, you can learn to read a financial statement. Everything is built up from zero, with one company carried through every lens.

What does joining cost?

Joining the list is free. The guide itself is a paid product — modestly priced — and the courses come later. What the list gets is first word when the guide launches and the launch price before it rises.

What will you do with my email?

Tell you when the guide launches, and send occasional notes when there's something genuinely worth your time. Nothing else, and no sharing it.
